About the company
Avannaa Exploration Services AB is a young and expanding company based in Kiruna, Sweden. We are a mineral exploration consultancy specializing in geological and geotechnical data collection and interpretation for mineral exploration and mine development projects in Northern Sweden.
About the role
We require a passionate and knowledgeable geologist with leadership or management experience. The chosen candidate will work on a variety of iron ore mining projects for a globally recognised miner, and is responsible for implementing workflow procedures based on direction from the company’s General Manager, specifically responsible for the AES staff and operations within Gällivare. The duties include supervising employees during day-to-day tasks and managing the overall workflow within the workplace.
The candidate will be responsible for supervising geological and geotechnical data collection on projects at different development stages ranging from greenfield exploration to feasibility studies to advanced production stages, within the ‘Malmfälten’ mining Province of Northern Sweden.
Main responsibilities
- Supervision of geological and geotechnical data-collection, ensuring best practice is followed.
- Assist with recruitment when required, plan the introduction, training and development of current and new staff.
- Staff performance evaluation, development talks and salary talks.
- Address physical or psychosocial workplace issues and risks. Undertake actions to create a safe, respectful and inclusive team environment, ensuring employees adhere to the company’s policies and guidelines.
- Audit and perform adequate quality control checks of various data sets, overseeing QA/QC protocols to ensure the highest quality of data.
- Leadership and training of technical teams, demonstrating continuous improvement of technical performance.
- Project progress and technical reporting for clients.
- Accountability for meeting project aims and objectives.
- Ensuring continued good client and contractor relations.
- Assist management with planning of project staff and wider company resources.
Experience requirements
Those who apply should be flexible and service-oriented, have a good ability to collaborate and enjoy working in a multicultural team. Superior communication, interpersonal, client service skills combined with a strong attention to detail and a high degree of integrity is required.
A minimum of 3 years experience working on mining or exploration drilling projects is a prerequisite, with some previous experience leading technical teams. A strong understanding of core-logging best practice is required, with knowledge of parameters such as Q-System, RMR, MRMR as well as general geological and structural core-logging and geochemical sampling practices.
Previous experience managing surface or underground exploration drill rigs and contractors is favorable. Proficiency in MS Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams) is also required as is experience of geo-databases, GIS, and 3D modeling software.
Education and qualifications
The candidate must have a BSc or MSc degree in Geology or Geotechnical Engineering.
Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate fluently in English in both speaking and writing is mandatory. Knowledge of Swedish is advantageous.
A full, clean driving license is also mandatory for this position.
Location
The position will be based in Gälliavre, although travel to other locations in Sweden is sometimes required. Company housing can be provided if required.

Contract: Permanent position
Salary: Monthly
Remuneration: Negotiable based on education and experience
Workdays: Monday-Friday regular office hours with occasional overtime/weekend work dependent upon project requirements.
