SIPRI is looking for a Researcher for the Sahel/West Africa Programme

SIPRI is recruiting a Researcher for the Sahel/West Africa Programme (SWAP). The role has a strong quantitative focus and is particularly suited for candidates with solid experience in sampling methodologies, survey design, and quantitative data analysis. About the Programme The Sahel/West Africa Programme is part of SIPRI’s Conflict, Peace and Security research cluster. The programme conducts mixed-method research on conflict dynamics, peacebuilding, governance and security in the Sahel and West Africa, and collaborates closely with African civil society organisations, academic institutions, international NGOs and other partners. Projects are funded by the EU, UN agencies and government donors. Main Responsibilities The Researcher will: • Research design • Develop research methodologies and sampling strategies for surveys and perception studies. • Develop and code questionnaires using Kobo Toolbox/ODK. • Train data collection teams and support quantitative fieldwork operations. • Manage data collection and ensure data quality. • Conduct statistical analysis using R or Stata and contribute to visualisation (QGIS, Tableau, Power BI). • Contribute to high-quality research outputs, including reports, articles, and policy briefs. • Contribute to proposals and fundraising efforts. • Mentor junior staff such as Research Assistants and Interns. • Manage SWAP’s databases and documentation processes. • Collaborate with other SIPRI programmes when relevant. • Ensuring compliance with ethical standars and data protection requirements during data collection and analysis.  The role includes occasional travel for research, fieldwork, dissemination and partner meetings, primarily within Africa, subject to SIPRI’s safety assessments.  Your Profile We are looking for someone who: • Has strong quantitative research skills and enjoys methodological work. • Works well in multicultural teams and in international research settings. • Communicates clearly, both in writing and verbally. • Is motivated to contribute to evidence-based research that supports peace and security. • Is willing to travel primarily to the Sahel region, subject to security assessments.  Required Qualifications • Master’s degree in social sciences, statistics, econometrics or a related field. • Proven experience in quantitative research. • Strong command of sampling methodologies and research design. • Experience coding surveys (Kobo Toolbox/ODK). • Excellent data analysis skills (R or Stata). • Fluency in French and English (spoken and written). • Knowledge of conflict, peace, stability or governance issues in the Sahel/West Africa region.  Meritorious • Experience with QGIS, Power BI, Tableau or similar tools. • Experience from fieldwork or working with partners in West Africa/Sahel. • Experience in mixed-method or interdisciplinary research environments.
